There is nothing quite like traveling the open road. Maybe it’s something in the DNA of Americans, but we love our cars with the windshield rolled down and rolling vistas before us. As the publisher of Travel Guide Fly/Drive Alaska, I have logged thousands of miles in my van roaming the scenic by-ways of the 49th state. From as far north as the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of the Alaska coast, I have been on the move exploring cities and towns, national parks and coastlines in order to give you the knowledge to see Alaska like never before. Taking on the largest state in the union doesn’t have to be intimidating, as I have put together five driving itineraries. Each one incorporates tips and places of interest to make your vacation a unique experience.

All itineraries begin by flying from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska, with Alaska Air and renting a vehicle. There are many car rental companies in Anchorage that have vehicles for every budget. Travel Guide recommends Midnight Car and Van Rental, located a short taxi cab ride from the airport. They have an extensive fleet of cars ranging from mid-size to SUV’s and pickups to even a 12 passenger van. They will also take you back to the airport when you return your vehicle and they offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from any local hotel. Another option is to cruise the highways in style by renting a RV from one of the companies in Anchorage. There are a variety of RV classes available to rent, including trailers, camper vans and Winnebagos.

Breathtaking scenery and untamed wilderness will greet you no matter which way you travel from Anchorage, whether north to Denali or south to the “emerald isle”. Each itinerary put together by Travel Guide Fly/Drive Alaska incorporates distinctive sites and adventures unique to the area. These excursions will produce lifelong memories that will keep you planning your next Alaskan adventure. As their state motto says, “North to the future”.
