Imagine waking up in the morning, the sun shining through your cabin window as you pour yourself a cup of coffee. Walking out to the porch, you stroll several yards down to the 150 feet of private river frontage. Throwing your line into the Kenai, known as the world’s greatest sportfishing river, you breathe in the crisp, fresh Alaskan air and patiently anticipate the bite of a sockeye salmon.

River Rock Lodge, located 10 minutes from the town of Soldotna, can make your Alaskan fishing dreams come true.

Owner Jeremy Mastre says, “Great fishing trips don’t just happen. We’re here to ensure that you end up in the right place, at the right time, and with all the right information so that you can go home with fish tales that don’t need any embellishment!”

The lodge not only boasts cozy and comfortable cabins and on-site fish processing, but also personal guided activities such as glacier tours, bear viewing and flight seeing, making River Rock a true family vacation destination. Jeremy has decades of experience in hunting, fishing and is a licensed river guide. His wife and three daughters help run the lodge and each family member is dedicated to their guests ensuring that they leave with memories to last a lifetime. River Rock Lodge is unique among the area’s guided operators because they will customize your experience. Guests decide where they want to fish: ocean, high mountain, river, the species of fish they are after: salmon, halibut, trout, and what type of experiences they would like to add-on and River Rock will build the itinerary. To transport guests, River Rock has both a sea plane and boats. And because Jeremy and his family live year round in Alaska, he is connected to other top guides in the area.

“These people are my friends. We ski and hunt together. They also know Alaska like the back of their hand and we sometimes collaborate on designing a unique add-on experience for a customer.”

Along with fishing, River Rock offers bear viewing. Flying into several areas, guests will then be boated to top bear viewing locations where they can safely photograph and film these incredible animals as they fish, eat and play with their cubs. Each booking at River Rock includes fishing rods and fitted hip boots. A welcome packet has enough bait to start your fishing adventure and more bait can easily be purchased in the town of Soldotna. The cabins have fully equipped kitchens and groceries can be purchased in town or you can try one of Soldotna’s first-class restaurants. Jeremy may not be a fish whisperer, but he definitely understands the fish runs. For the first time in 100 years, commercial fishing has been closed on the east side of the upper Cook Inlet, which has the potential to increase the salmon run along the Kenai. According to Travel Alaska, the following are the potential fish runs:

Sockeye Salmon (Red): Late-May through early June and mid-July through August.

Coho Salmon (Silver): Late July through September.

Pink Salmon (Humpy): Late July through mid-August.

Even-numbered years Rainbow Trout: Mid-June through October.

However, someone as knowledgeable as Jeremy understands the river better than most people. “I’m not here to just take someone’s money. I’m a straight shooter and will tell you if the fish you are after is running. I do everything in my power to make a customer happy. I want you to leave, loving Alaska as much as I do.”
